Vladimir Putin thwarted Turkey’s stronger presence in the region, which Moscow sees as its backyard. This is how Reuters commented on the agreement reached in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an agreement on a complete ceasefire and all military actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
Reuters commented that Putin had finally achieved Russia’s dream of sending Russian peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh for more than two decades. This expands Russia’s military footprint, ending geopolitical competition between Moscow and Ankara. Putin has prevented the total takeover of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijanis backed by Turkey.
Ankara said the ceasefire agreement was a “sacred success” for its ally Azerbaijan, while Recep Tayyip Erdogan described Ankara’s support for Azerbaijan as part of Turkey’s quest for its “deserved place in the world order.” Russian peacekeepers, armed and backed by armored vehicles, are freezing the conflict, making it impossible for Turkey’s powerful forces to advance.
