“Gotse Delchev was born in the Bulgarian city of Kukush, studied at the Bulgarian secondary school in Thessaloniki and at the military school in Sofia: a Bulgarian officer, a Bulgarian teacher, a Bulgarian revolutionary. He has the opportunity to make a career in a free Bulgaria, but he chooses the most difficult and risky one, to return to enslaved Macedonia and burn the Bulgarians in their thirst for freedom. And there he meets his end, killed in battle with the Turkish enslavers. Perhaps today someone from our western neighbor has not read correctly his story and wonder what Gotse Delchev is like. When in doubt, you can read the hundreds of letters, articles and other materials written by Gotse Delchev. Or you could come to the beautiful Bulgarian city of Samokov, place a flower on his monument and read what he said: “We are fighting for the autonomy of Macedonia and Edirne to preserve them in their entirety for the future unification of Bulgaria.”
This was said by Defense Minister Krassimir Karakachanov today, November 10, at the inauguration of a commemorative sign of Gotse Delchev in the city of Samokov.

The mayor of the city Vladimir Georgiev also participated in the opening ceremony of the monument. The event was attended by deputies, the deputy governor, representatives of the municipal administration, members of the Association of Bulgarian Clans of Macedonia and others. As a token of gratitude for the work of the Bulgarian revolutionary, wreaths of flowers were placed in front of the recently inaugurated monument on behalf of the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Defense, the municipal leadership, IMRO and the citizens.
In front of journalists, Minister Karakachanov also commented on today’s talks with the delegation of the Republic of North Macedonia, related to his candidacy for EU membership.
“We have expressed our position, which is clear, unequivocal and fully in line with the framework position adopted by the parliament last October. We explained that we cannot make any compromises on issues related to Bulgarian history, to the identity of the Bulgarian hero, to all those people we call part of our common history, “said Minister Karakachanov.

He stressed that the meeting was conducted in a frank and friendly tone. “I think they understood that Bulgaria does not follow any policy of stubbornness, that Bulgaria is a sovereign state and is not influenced by the mood of one or another European capital.”
