The pressure on Sofia over the North Macedonia issue is too great. In recent years, Bulgarian diplomacy has collapsed under pressure from important factors from the West.
It is very likely that the new White House administration will also pressure us, and we will not be able to reflect properly. This was told to BNR by BAS historian Voyn Bozhinov, author of the book “Republic of Macedonia in Contemporary Geopolitics”.
Lyubomir Kyuchukov: The blockade of the Republic of Macedonia for accession to the EU is in favor of the Macedonian
Greece is trying to show that it has nothing to do with PCM, in our country the opposite happens
According to the big problem for the Bulgarian government is to preserve our national identity in the face of an ideologywhich is becoming more aggressive.
“The Macedonian also wants European legitimacy. If we allow this, there is no turning back… The fact that some countries are currently silent, it does not mean that the Bulgarian position is not heard, each pursues their own interests“Bozhinov said.
He believes that official Berlin will continue their position, that they will face Bulgaria with a difficult choice, and we show that we cannot maintain our position.
Bulgaria is in a very delicate situation. Greece has washed its hands in a magnificent way with the Prespa Agreement, and in the eyes of European public opinion we are the main culprits for the delay in the processes of European integration in the Western Balkans, thinks the historian.
“Our objective is to minimize Macedonian influence in North Macedonia … Macedonian is a racist theory“.
It is gratifying that the Bulgarian society supports the political class on the North Macedonia issue, announced Voyn Bozhinov.
We remind you that the multidisciplinary joint commission of experts on historical and educational issues of Bulgaria and North Macedonia was established as a result of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbor and Cooperation between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia, signed on August 1, 2017 and which came into effect on February 14. 2018
The commission’s first meeting made little progress on Antiquity and the Middle Ages, but no agreement was reached on the Gotse Delchev issue.
The stumbling block in the work of the experts is precisely the personality of Gotse Delchev. The Bulgarian side of the commission refused to accept the two countries together to celebrate the party of the legendary figure and ideologue of IMRO on October 7, when his bones were delivered to Skopje by Georgi Dimitrov.
In early October, Bulgaria established the conditions for North Macedonia to receive our support for membership of the EU. One of them is North Macedonia to achieve concrete results on the subject of important events and historical figures in our common history: Gotse Delchev, Ilinden-Preobrazhensko uprising and others.
Following the September 13 meeting, which has been described as “the most unsuccessful” to date, President Rumen Radev called an urgent consultative meeting, in which he insisted that boundaries be drawn for North Macedonia.
On May 2, 2020, it became clear that Macedonia had unilaterally ended the talks on our common history.
After a pause on October 16, 2020, the Bulgarian-Macedonian Joint Commission for Historical Affairs has made progress in developing a common position on the May 24 issue, the writing and work of Saints Brothers Cyril and Methodius. This is the only one of the 14 history textbook-related notes that has progressed.
