“We have many beds. I can find 300 beds. But since I cannot staff them, they will only be beds. A medical bed is a bed that has a resource to care for the patient lying in it. Both financial and human resources of competent medical personnel ”, The president of the Association of Municipal Hospitals Dr. Nedelcho Totev told NOVA.
He explained that in the Chirpán multidisciplinary hospital, which he runs, most of the doctors and nurses are elderly, with chronic diseases, and some leave scared by the coronavirus.
Currently, more than 3,800 patients are hospitalized with covid-19 in Bulgaria. This is almost 10% of the 39 thousand beds for active treatment in the country, explained the president of the Bulgarian Medical Union, Dr. Ivan Madjarov.

“This virus has a weakness: it does not seriously affect young people. Our hopes are entirely on the young colleagues who work tirelessly in these departments. We said in the spring that there would come a time when the system could not admit more patients. There is no chaos right now, but high voltage. There are individual personal tragedies of people who want to be treated but cannot. This has happened in other much more developed countries. Doctors are not to blame. The system works. Society has failed. It had to understand that we will not be able to help everyone, “said Dr. Madjarov.
“I do not want to reach a blockade again and for people to lose their jobs, wages and livelihoods, because this is another tragedy. What prevents our society from helping its doctors and nurses? Why shut up if we can’t follow the mask rules? “

The president of the Bulgarian Medical Union insists that, although the right to medical care is guaranteed by the Bulgarian Constitution, in the current crisis there will be cases in which hospitals will refuse admission.
“The epidemic is practically like a wave. It floods us and passes behind us. It is clear that there will be cases of this type. Every day I struggle with this, even though I have very good contacts, to find places for my acquaintances and relatives who have become ill, worsened with pneumonia symptoms and have nowhere to go, ”said Dr. Madjarov.
“We are in the situation described by Prof. Mutafchiiski. Associate Professor Mangarov announced that natural selection will pass us like a light breeze and we will all get good immunity and here and there some individual twig will burn. However, it did not turn out like that, but exactly what Professor Mutafchiiski said is happening ”.
Donchev: There will be no checkpoints even in the worst case
“The system is under pressure and it is difficult to help with other diseases. The planned admission was canceled, precisely because we are concentrating on the covid,” said Dr. Madjarov.
“As a society, we must implement the current light measures so that we do not go to even more drastic ones. With force, police and restraints, it is difficult to overcome something. I don’t think we should get to the barricades in the streets, ”added Dr. Madjarov.
