A huge Kalimantan Island worm has been discovered in the suburbs of the US city of Richmond, Virginia, Fox News reported.
A local who came across the 12-inch creature thought it was a snake and reported it to the US Wildlife Control Service. The photo he sent surprised his employees: “We had never seen anything like it,” they admitted in Facebook.
The creature was identified only after the photo was posted on the social network. It turned out to be a predatory hairworm belonging to the genus Bipalium, adds BTA.
The invasion of these worms in the United States has lasted more than 100 years. During this time, they managed to capture California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas, as well as North and South Carolina. Representatives of the species have not yet been found in Virginia.
Bipalium worms feed on living organisms in the soil and pose no threat to humans or pets.
