Today is the feast of the Church of the Assumption of the Archangel, which is always celebrated on the Saturday before Archangel Day, on November 8. On this day, tribute is paid to the memory of the dead, as well as eternal gratitude to those who died in the ranks of the Bulgarian army.
The Assumption of the Archangel, which precedes the great feast of St. Michael the Archangel, finds its basis in the Christian dogma of the resurrection of the dead. Hence the respect for the dead, who as Christians we pay at every funeral and for ascetics throughout the year.
The Assumption of the Archangel is also called “Assumption of Rangel”, “Great Assumption”, “Male Assumption”.
At the Assumption of the Archangel, as in any other commemoration, wheat, bread, wine, cakes, sweets, fruits, meat are distributed. In addition to relatives, it is distributed to people around neighboring graves, even if they are strangers. The wheat symbolizes the resurrection and the bread: Jesus Christ.
The importance of the Assumption is great. This is not just a day when the relatives of the deceased gather by his grave to “eat and drink.” The commemoration that is carried out is also a remembrance of the living for the deceased who has not been forgotten. According to theologians, this is the connection between the earthly Church and the heavenly one.
The tradition of honoring fallen military personnel dates back to 1924. It was discontinued in 1946 to be rebuilt in 1992 to the present.
In all major regional cities, additional transportation is provided to the cemetery parks.
