Terror in Vienna: dead and wounded in a series of attacks

Several people were killed and injured in a shooting at six locations in central Vienna, including a synagogue. Reports on the incident are contradictory, but Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told ORF television that it was undoubtedly a terrorist attack. “For the moment, I can confirm that this is an obvious terrorist attack for us,” he said.

According to unconfirmed reports, there were seven dead and four injured.

Police said there were shootings at six different locations in the city.

According to initial reports, the police detained a suspect in the shooting. Another attacker is believed to have committed suicide or died. An ambulance confirmed that a person had died, but his identity was not released. According to local media, seven people may have died in the shooting. A police officer was seriously injured, the Austrian agency APA reported.

According to the police, the shooting was carried out by several people and the attack is not over yet, so they asked people to avoid the city center and public transport. The subway is stopped. Police urged citizens not to share photos and videos of the attack on social media, but to send them to them. The police operation continues.

The head of the Austrian Jewish community, Oscar Deutsch, said on Twitter that it was unclear whether the synagogue and its offices were the target of the shooting. They were already closed at the time of the attack, Reuters reported. The newspaper “Kronen Zeiturg” claims that one of the wounded was guarding the synagogue and the attack was against her. According to other media, shots were fired near the square near the synagogue – Schwedenplatz, Reuters reported.
