A peaceful demonstration in Madrid was transformed yesterday into a street fight between small rebel groups and the police, who tried to disperse them, Spanish television RTVE reported. The images showed burning trash cans, people throwing stones and broken shop windows. 32 people were arrested and three policemen were injured.
There were also violent protests in Barcelona, where one person was arrested. The night before, 20 police officers and 7 protesters were injured in street clashes there.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has warned that protests accompanied by irrationality and violence are unacceptable.
Under the new quarantine measures, local authorities in many regions have closed internal travel borders. In Catalonia, for example, people cannot leave their cities on weekends. In many cities, including Barcelona, the afternoon schedule is announced and it is not possible to leave the house until the morning. Schools and kindergartens remain open, but restaurants, theaters, cinemas and gyms are closed.
There were also heavy clashes, including arrests, in Valencia, Malaga, Burgos, Bilbao, San Sebastián and several cities in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria and Rioja.
“Only with the help of responsibility, unity and sacrifice can we defeat the pandemic. The aggressive and irrational behavior of small groups is unacceptable. This is not the way out,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on Twitter. He thanked law enforcement for providing security.
The number of coronavirus infections registered in Spain has already exceeded 1.1 million and the number of deaths so far exceeds 35,800.
On October 25, the Spanish government introduced a maximum alert regime in the country, which can be extended until May next year, recalls TASS.
A night curfew has been announced, running until November 9, after which local authorities will be able to extend the measure, which may also impose restrictions on movement.
