The UK enters a new 4-week national quarantine

Now is the time to act, because there is no alternative. This was stated in a statement by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who announced new strict restrictive measures for his country, the BBC reported.

“As of Thursday, people in England must stay home,” he said, noting that he said the measures would continue until early December.

“We are not alone in what we are living,” said Boris Johnson, referring to European countries that have introduced restrictive measures.

Unlike the first national quarantine, schools, colleges and universities will remain open.

“We cannot allow this virus to harm our children’s futures more than it has already,” Johnson said.

He called on parents to continue sending their children to school.

The Prime Minister listed some of the exceptions for leaving home:

  • for education;
  • for work if you can’t be away from home;
  • for exercise and outdoor recreation;
  • for medical reasons;
  • to buy food and other necessities;
  • take care of other people.

Food deliveries to households will continue, but pubs, bars and restaurants will have to close, the prime minister said.

Grocery stores will remain open, so “there is no need to stock up,” Johnson insisted, adding that jobs must remain open where you cannot work from home.

“Christmas will be different this year, perhaps very different, but my sincere hope and conviction is that by taking strict measures, we will be able to allow the families of the country to be together,” he said.

The new virus in the UK

The total number of coronavirus cases in the UK has passed the 1 million mark, now 1,011,660.

The government estimates up to 4,000 deaths a day during the winter months if no action is taken.

In the past seven days, the UK has reported an average of almost 23,000 new cases per day and 237 deaths from COVID-19.
