Alexander Usik is the new intercontinental heavyweight champion. The 2012 London Olympic gold medalist defeated Derek Chisora by unanimous decision after 12 rounds and thus congratulated himself on his success in only his second match in the ring in the hardest. Thus, the 33-year-old Ukrainian became a mandatory contender for the WBO belt, which is owned by Anthony Joshua.
First round:
Chisora started the match more actively with several direct hit attempts, but Usik managed to avoid them with his fast legs. During the round, the Ukrainian started stepping on and trying to hurt the Briton, but nothing serious happened. At the end of the part, 36-year-old Derek took the lead again, but the London Olympic champion deftly got into the rivets.
Second round:
The second round began with a quick exchange of blows and counterattacks by the two. Usik is already moving visibly better and attacking with more courage. The 33-year-old Ukrainian’s lightning speed prevents Chisora from hitting his opponent from a long distance, and he is forced to expend more energy to chase him around the ring.
Third round:
Chisora is still looking for heavy shots from close range, but is visibly slower and Usik appears to be aiming to weaken his opponent to take advantage. In the last minute of the assault, the Briton pressed Alexander against the ropes twice, but the speedy escaped without serious injury.
Fourth round:
Chisora started off with a powerful right hook, then briefly pressed Usik into the corner. The novice’s demarcation in the most severe continues to impress through diving. At the end of the round, Usik staggered and fell onto one leg, but was up in an instant.
Fifth round:
In the fifth round, the two started with a more cautious idea, but over time they launched gradual attacks. It is noteworthy, however, that in these minutes they are quite on the lookout after the first 4 dynamic rounds, now there is a setback in terms of quality and aggression.
Sixth round:
Chisora started off with an attempt at a powerful right kick, but missed fiercely. Usik continues with his tactic to move around the opponent and apply quick, short combinations to the body and head. In the last minute, the Briton caught his opponent by the ropes, but received a warning for illegal play. Derek rarely manages to catch up with Alexander so far, but when he does, he does his best to score points.
Round 7:
In the first 30-40 seconds of the seventh part the game was positional and with almost no shot attempts. This time Chisora did not advance furiously, but decided to give Usik the initiative. However, the Ukrainian did not engage in reckless actions and continued to circle Derek. In the last 20 seconds, Alexander hit a few hooks, which probably guarantees him a round.
Eighth round:
In the middle of the round, Usik grabbed Chisora’s head and chin with some quick combinations. Subsequently, the Olympic champion landed a left and a right blow to the face of his opponent and this earned him a round with 10 to 9 points.
Ninth round:
Realizing that she was losing on the judges’ cards, Chisora moved forward again, but her chaotic actions, mixed with fatigue, rarely led to the desired result. However, in the final 30 seconds of the assault, the Briton recovered and found the target several times.
Round 10:
In the tenth round, Chisora seemed to receive a new surge of energy and raise her level. Initially, Usik was more passive, but then he did not owe his opponent and tried to meet the challenge. At the end of the part, Derek tried several hooks, but none found their target.
Eleventh round:
In the penultimate part, Usik went on the attack and in the first 40 seconds he was not disturbed. After that, however, Chisora reacted as if stung and scared her opponent several times. Towards the end of the second minute, Derek was furious and took the initiative point-blank. Usik responded with a southpaw to the head, and the round ended with dirty punches that missed the mark.
Twelfth round:
Chisora opted to wait in the final round, but aside from a brief exchange of shots from close range in the middle of the part, he failed to surprise Usik with another.
In the end, the head judge triumphantly raised the hand of Alexander Usik, who won by unanimous decision: 117: 112, 115: 113 and 115: 113 points.
