“One in five people with the flu suffers from a complication,” said Professor Todor Kantardzhiev, director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, during a meeting of the parliamentary health committee, BTA reported.

“Influenza is treated very successfully if the diagnosis is correct and treatment is started on time,” he said.

“This year, the flu vaccine is quadrivalent. The national flu control program, which has been in place since last year, allows people over 65 to get vaccinated for free,” Kantardzhiev recalled.

There are 180,000 doses provided under the program.

“This year, for the first time in almost 30 years, influenza vaccination coverage is expected to reach 7 percent, and in previous years it did not reach more than 2 to 3 percent,” said Professor Kantardzhiev. According to him, more than 10 percent of the population gets sick in winter.

Preventing influenza consists of limiting contact with the sick. The specialist also recalled not touching his mouth, nose and eyes, as well as observing high personal hygiene.
