New: Urticaria, an early symptom of COVID-19
20% of those infected with COVID-19 also have skin problems at the beginning of the disease, one of the most common is urticaria. This was explained to Monitor by Associate Professor Maria Staevska – Head of the Clinical Allergology Clinic at Alexandrovska Hospital.
“These are people who already have COVID. A study by colleagues from other countries found that, among other symptoms, urticaria occurred in 200 patients. And in 10% this is the first symptom. We had children with a rash without symptoms. Later , it turned out they had a coronavirus, “Associate Professor Staevska said. So the parents put them on a diet, they thought they had allergies or skin problems, but then it turned out they were caused by a virus.
“At the clinic we do a quick test at the entrance. People came only with hives, with no other symptoms. It turns out that it is COVID and on the third day there are already other symptoms, ”added Prof. Asoc. Staevska.
The Allergology Clinic at Alexandrovska Hospital has passed and a severe audit is now a member of the International Center for Urticaria Treatment. Therefore, October 1 is marked as a day to fight hives.
“We are talking about patients who are suffering a lot. You can have swelling, even when you go for an interview and cannot find the cause. At the same time, there is no refund from the Fund,” he said. Staevska.
The second stage of patient follow-up by telemedicine has already begun. It will have the presence of 40 specialists from the country. Any patient with complaints can be viewed online on the Halee platform. There is an opportunity to consult a doctor, show tests and photos.
The first stage of the initiative took place in July, when the Allergology Society decided to carry out this campaign. At the time, it included 500 free checkups a month through the telemedicine platform. The idea is that during a pandemic, patients should not neglect their treatment and have access to specialists.
