Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has unequivocally refused to support the European Union, and France in particular, in its conflict with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. There is no clear official Bulgarian position on the conflict.
This was announced by MEP Radan Kanev and the spokesman for foreign affairs and European politics of Democratic Bulgaria, Stefan Tafrov, in a joint statement on social media about the scandal between French President Emanuel Macron and his Turkish counterpart over Macron’s refusal to stop publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. . The two heads of state fought hard over Islam and Turkey called for a boycott of French products.
According to Kanev and Tafrov, Bulgaria should have good relations with neighboring Turkey, “but this does not justify Borissov’s humiliating behavior towards our country.” It does not reflect the values and beliefs of the Bulgarian people. Terrorism and the totalitarian ideology of “political Islam” are a great threat to the security of Europe and to the security, freedom and rights of all European citizens. The right to life and personal security and freedom of expression are “Our fundamental values are not subject to negotiation, bargaining and commercial interests. The threat against them is a threat to the European way of life,” they said.
That is why French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders have declared war on terrorism and “political Islam” and Bulgaria’s place is with them.
Absolutely unacceptable as the leader of a NATO member state and an EU candidate, Erdogan has aggressively aligned himself with terrorism and totalitarianism. We, as Bulgarian and European citizens and patriots, are not neutral in this conflict. It is not “superfluous”. The problem “is not a small contradiction. It is a true conflict of values, on which the future of the EU depends”, Radan Kanev and Stefan Tafrov are categorical.
The two renewed the call of democratic Borsov Bulgaria to stop the expulsion of Turkish citizens to Turkey, who sought political asylum in Bulgaria as persecuted by the Erdogan regime, as well as “their greedy behavior towards the Turkish president in general.”
“Today is the time to demonstrate that the principles and values of liberal democracy are unconditional, and tolerance and mutual respect are only possible with their strict observance. Bulgaria is not benevolent, nor is Baiganian neutral in this conflict. Bulgaria is not Boyko. Borissov, “they said. Kanev and Tafrov are categorical.
