Plant bare roots in trees and shrubs to save money

The short day and lower temperatures in fall are a sign that you need to prepare your garden for the coming winter months. In fact, the more work you do now, the less you’ll have in the spring when it’s time to plant new flowers, and all the green bushes remind you that they need attention as they begin to grow vigorously.

Rearrange the fruit trees

trees

Now is the time to move the roots of the cherries near a bench or gazebo in the garden so that over time the branches of the fruit tree can maintain shade on hot days. This will not be a problem not only for the cherry, but also for all perennials. The reason is that the soil is still warm enough to stimulate root growth to reach depth before winter. Also, the fall rains keep the soil moist, which will make the plants even harder.

Plant bare roots

Trees and shrubs with bare roots, that is, without stems or leaves, are much cheaper than others. Therefore, it is an economical solution to plant them in the fall in your garden. All you need to do before the last cold of December is to cover your soil with some straw to protect the roots from the negative temperatures.

Prepare compost

of fallen leaves

Most of the trees have not yet fallen. Instead of just throwing away the yellowish fallen leaves, collect them and compost them along with branches and plant debris. You need a large wooden or plastic container for this purpose. Broken branches are placed at the bottom. They are covered in leaves, brush, and pieces of wood. It is advisable to put a little damp soil and eggshells, because they are rich in calcium. Stir the contents of the container at least once a day to allow air to enter. The compost should be ready in about 30 days.

Clean your garden

tools

The gardener’s tools should always be clean and sharp so that you can prune bushes and trees with them. This happens mainly in spring, but then you have so many responsibilities in the garden that it is advisable to prepare your tools now.

Make a birdhouse

You will not regret having built a birdhouse in your garden. This will not only make it more welcoming, but it will also help birds that do not migrate south with additional food. The houses are built next to a tall bush, tree, or fence to protect them from attacks by predators. It’s a good idea to plant berry plants around it for spring food.

Divide the rhizomes

It is recommended to divide the rhizomes of perennial shrubs into 2-3 parts to keep the plant healthy after winter. How does this work? Remove the rhizome and clean it very well from the soil. For maximum effect, it is advisable to wash it with water to see as clearly as possible which parts are of sufficient quality to plant in a new place and begin to grow.

Sow new grass

The grass is usually sown until mid-October, but as this year’s fall is warmer than usual, the period lasts until at least the end of the month. This is the right time, because humidity is high, temperatures have not dropped too low, and weeds grow more slowly. To have a pleasant lawn, it is recommended not only to clean the ground, but also to level the ground. The grass will have a stable root system and at least 7-8 cm in height for 40 days. During this period, follow the weather forecast. If the frost falls, it will seriously damage their growth.
