“Why are we taking Van de Beek? We really don’t need him.”

Manchester United don’t need midfielder Donnie van de Beek, who was bought for £ 40 million, according to former Red Devils defender Patrice Evra. The Dutch international from Ajax saw United’s zero draw with Chelsea from the bench on Saturday.

He was considered the club’s star addition during the last transfer window, but has not started as a starter in the Premier League and has only had one hour of play in the championship so far.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has plenty of options in midfield and so far prefers to use a formation that doesn’t include Van de Beek.

Paul Pogba also stayed on the bench against Chelsea, but unlike the Dutchman, the Frenchman entered the second half.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Evra said: “I don’t care about Van de Beek, but why do we buy it? He always watches the games from the stands. We don’t need him, that’s the truth.”

His former United teammate Gary Neville backed him up, saying that Van de Beek himself wondered why he was drawn.

“It’s all a mystery. It seems like he’s not in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans. From game to game, people wonder, ‘Well, at £ 40 million, shouldn’t he play?’
