Sánchez, who delivered a televised speech after an emergency cabinet meeting, said the measure would remain in effect until early May. Throughout the country, except for the Canary Islands, there will be a curfew from 23 to 6 at night.
“The situation we are going through is extreme. The reality is that Europe and Spain are flooded by a second wave of the pandemic,” Sánchez said.
On Wednesday, Spain became the first country in the European Union to cross the threshold of 1 million registered coronavirus infections. The death toll in the country is close to 35,000.
