The prototype of the Bulgarian vaccine against COVID-19 will be ready by the end of the year at the Institute of Microbiology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. When will the testing end and when will the vaccine be ready for use?

“I think at this point we are about 1/3 of the way to our final destination. It is a prototype vaccine that has been tested in laboratory animals. To make sure this prototype is not harmful, it must first be tested in mice.” said Dr. Ilian Manoilov of BAS.

He adds that the animals in question are arranged in special kennels. It is also necessary that the Ethics Commission allow such an experiment in Bulgaria.

“We should start working actively with animals in April-May,” added Manoilov.

According to the expert, the requests from Russia and the United States for several ready-made vaccines are political and do not concern scientists. “We have information that the vaccines in question may work. However, what Russia is doing is not so ethical.” In the United States, prototypes of vaccines that have already been developed for other viruses are being tested, “he said.

The scientist adds that economics today is closely related to science. “The fact that many countries buy vaccines without even producing them shows that money is increasingly interfering with our scientific work. This is not right, “he said.
