Shanghai Wildlife Park has vowed to increase security after one of its employees died after being brutally bitten by bears in front of terrified visitors, Channel 3 reports.

The accident occurred in a safari park on Saturday and was filmed by one of the passengers on a tour bus. In a video posted on the internet, a bus moves through the wilderness area and passengers start yelling, signaling a gathering of bears behind the window.

“There is someone there!” One of the passengers yelled anxiously, and another asked, “What’s going on?”

The zoo expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased employee, adding that management is terribly upset by the tragedy and will do everything possible to prevent this from happening again. The park also apologized to tourists who witnessed the gruesome incident and reimbursed them for tickets.

The park temporarily closed the wildlife area, where the bears roamed without barriers, and increased security measures. Visitors can only be in this area by buses.

Video of the incident quickly spread on Chinese social network Weibo, sparking controversy over the need for such facilities for the animals.

Some users have called for the closure of zoos in general, pointing out that bears are wild animals and do not know any other behavior. Others blame the tragedy on the zoo’s management and insufficient security measures.
