The GERB removal of Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who was the right-hand man to leader and prime minister Boyko Borissov for nearly two decades, was prepared at least a year and a half before the Apartmentgate scandal, which became the formal occasion. Tsvetanov himself commented on this on Bulgarian National Radio.
The rift between him and Borissov came last spring after nearly 20 years of public collaboration, starting in 2001, when Tsvetanov first appeared in the media as an assistant to the then Secretary General of the Interior. However, last spring, after the scandal with the luxury apartment in the Iztok district of the capital, bought at prices lower than the market, Tsvetanov was forced to leave the vice-presidency in GERB and the leader of the parliamentary group, remaining as a regular member of the party for one year. and this June he left to establish his own political project: “Republicans for Bulgaria.”
Today, Tsvetanov explained his dismissal with the rapprochement between GERB and MRF, as evidenced by the results of the local elections.
When asked for further clarification, Tsvetanov said he was
felt the shaking of their positions
Only at the height of the real estate scandal, and after the European elections in May 2019, did he speak with party members and analyze the situation and thus come to the conclusion that his dismissal was prepared earlier. “The process that began with the issue of my dismissal from GERB began a year, a year and a half before. And when I had the opportunity to analyze, I decided to leave,” he said, adding: “The last election marked a discrepancy, when I was there. and when not. GERB showed dependencies built in places by GERB and MRF “.
Tsvetanov added that while in parliament, he saw Borissov define policies with the people at his side in government, and then they were reduced to deputies for implementation. “Borissov made decisions with the people around him in the executive branch, and everyone else was given the task of being implemented in political terms,” he said.
“Tomislav Donchev, Vladi Goranov were the pillars,
Tsvetanov also criticized “misunderstandings” in energy decisions made in the Borisov-Donchev-Temenuzhka Petkova format, which he predicted would “endure a lot.” severe financial penalties “.
Tsvetanov contrasted this with the atmosphere of the first government, which from today’s point of view he described as “a good team connection”:
“Deputy Prime Minister Simeon Djankov and I were a good defensive wall
and there were opportunities for professional disputes, “he recalled his time in the executive branch. Due to this environment, Borissov did not have to make all the decisions and” distribute “as he does now.
Tsvetanov avoided answering the question whether Sotir Tsatsarov was a good chief prosecutor, as well as, according to Tsvetanov himself, he was a good judge since he was deputy prime minister. He chose to say that as a minister he worked well with his predecessor Boris Velchev. He added that with his new political formation he will work to reduce the political quota in the Supreme Council of the Judiciary. “We believe that with other political formations we can reach a political consensus even before the election of a new National Assembly, which should be done as soon as possible,” Tsvetanov said.
The former second person at GERB is awaiting the judicial registration of her “Republicans for Bulgaria” party. According to him, the surveys of sociological agencies do not capture it, because it does not yet exist in the public space. He is confident that in the next parliamentary elections he will form a parliamentary group strong enough to
“an inescapable factor”.
It will not work with the MRF and the BSP, it does not rule out a partnership with GERB without Borissov and with “all those who share Euro-Atlantic values.”
