French police shot dead a man who minutes earlier had killed a high school teacher on a street in a Paris suburb, France24 reported.
According to initial data, the crime was committed by a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.
French prosecutors say the attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism. It took place in Conflans-Saint-Honorine, a suburb northwest of Paris.
The alleged assailant was seen by a police patrol while walking with a knife in his hand not far from the scene of the attack and was shot dead, a police spokesman said.
According to the French media, the teacher showed his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in class. According to a police source, eyewitnesses heard the attacker shouting “Allah Akbar”.
According to another police source, the victim was beheaded in the attack, but this has not been confirmed.
In recent years, France has experienced a series of attacks by Islamic extremists. At the end of last month, an immigrant from Pakistan assaulted two people with a butcher in front of the old edition of the satirical weekly “Charlie Hebdo”.
In the same place, five years ago, Islamist militants shot and killed employees of the publication in retaliation for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
