Cambridge Virologist: COVID-19 Has Up To 15 Times Higher Mortality From Influenza

“COVID-19 is definitely not just the flu. Mortality is 3 to 15 times higher in different age groups. Allegations that an artificial panic is being created does not correspond to reality.” This was stated in the air of “Hello, Bulgaria” by the virologist from the University of Cambridge and the UN consultant Dr. Velislava Petrova.

He added that the current situation in Europe is not good. The number of infected grows rapidly and yesterday in the Old Continent more new infected were registered than in the United States. According to Dr. Petrova, countries in Europe are experiencing a second peak of the disease. It came after a period when people were restricted by restrictions and the increase was normal.

We observe another record of infected, almost 14% of those analyzed are positive

According to the specialist, the steps taken in our country go in unison with those of the whole world.

“You have to take into account the effect on the economy and many other factors,” said Dr. Petrova.

He added that at the beginning of the current second phase, many more young people are infected and their mortality is lower. However, these young people inevitably meet older than them, which will unfortunately lead to higher mortality, according to the virologist.

Dr. Petrova sees several elements around COVID-19 that everyone should be aware of. One of them is the masks.

“It is important to know that when WHO makes a decision, it is dictated by many factors. At the beginning of the pandemic, there were not enough masks and protective equipment available and that is why they are used and recommended with priority by the health sector. At that time “There was no evidence that they would protect people from the new virus. But now things are very different. The question of whether masks can protect us is not even on the agenda,” said the virologist.

The other important thing related to the spread of the coronavirus is herd immunity.

“This approach is not only unethical, it is also not supported by scientific data. This strategy is based on the fact that once you are infected, you will no longer be able to become infected with the virus. In COVID-19, however, this it is not true at all. There are many cases in which a person becomes re-infected, “says Dr. Petrova.

He adds that the antibodies generated do not necessarily mean that we cannot be infected. In many cases, they help the disease pass more easily.
