Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the “Vector” State Research Center for Virology and Biotechnology in Novosibirsk has registered EpiVacCorona, the second coronavirus vaccine in the country, TASS reported.

“I would like to start with the pleasant information that the Novosibirsk Vector Center has registered the second Russian vaccine against coronavirus. As far as I know, we are developing another vaccine at the Chumakov Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences,” Putin said during a meeting with government ministers, BNR reported.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova revealed that the first batch of the vaccine, developed by the institute in Novosibirsk, will consist of 60,000 doses, while the Chumakov Center’s vaccine candidate is expected to complete testing in December. In August, Russia became the first country to grant regulatory approval for a Covid-19 vaccine, even before the necessary large-scale tests were completed, raising concern among part of the global scientific community.

According to the Health Ministry, around 400 high-risk patients have already been vaccinated with Sputnik V, which is not yet publicly available. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Russia has recorded a total of 1,340,409 infections, the fourth largest in the world after the United States, India and Brazil.
