“We have every chance that more than 98% of the school year will take place in person. We cannot afford to close schools.” This was announced during a briefing by the Minister of Education, Krassimir Valchev.
According to him, there is no doubt that the increase in the number of people infected by COVID-19 also affects the educational system. “Teachers and students in quarantine are 0.5%, that is, five students out of every 1,000 do not study,” added Valchev.
He added: “We cannot afford to close schools. In the spring we organize compensatory training, but it cannot be permanent or as effective. World leaders have said we run the risk of slowing down children’s development and facing a generational catastrophe. .

According to him, the situation will probably get worse, but not only because of COVID-19, but also because of the appearance of seasonal viruses. “And now the main problem is not so much the number of infected students, but those who have developed flu-like symptoms,” he said.
There are currently 172 children and students and 165 teachers testing positive for COVID-19. “On average, these are 5-6 teachers and students per day, and the incidence of students is 6-7 times lower than the population average. This confirms the thesis that students rarely get sick and develop symptoms. The percentage of teachers is slightly above average, “Valchev said.
The Health Minister also explained how to act if a student has flu symptoms. Parents had two options: contact the GP to take the necessary measures or take their child for an exam. The Ministry of Health adheres to the first option. If, on the contrary, mass tests are carried out with rapid tests among students, there is a risk of obtaining incorrect results, believes the minister.
