NOVA experiment: who and how guarantees safety on night trains? After the last case of assault and self-mutilation on the train, in which an elderly man attacked another with a knife, our team approached one of the risky destinations. Why, despite the guarantees of the authorities, did it turn out that he was not in custody?

ONLY IN NOVA: A witness speaks of the bloody dispute on the Sofia-Burgas train

At Sofia’s central train station we are greeted by police officers who go through the ticket offices. However, only our team got on the train and the uniformed men stayed at the station. We left for Pazardzhik, deciding to film the trip with a hidden camera.

A man was sitting alone in the first compartment. Bring a cassette player and a beer. Those who are willing to share a drink are welcome.

“Do you drink? Drink, yes! Drink, yes! If you respect me, drink. A sip”, insists the man.

A driver addresses the noisy passenger. He tells you about loud music. However, it has no effect. While the party continues in this compartment, a man we randomly call Blagoy travels in the next. Travel from Sofia to Stara Zagora. He says he does it often because his trip is cheap.

“Sometimes there are policemen. There are no myths or legends. But as you say, someone’s feet smell. Some drink. I even bring a beer and drink,” said Blagoy.

Low personal hygiene is the reason for the attack on the Sofia – Bourgas train

He admits that he also runs into drug addicts on the train at night. “There have been cases of drug addicts who have run into me. I start running and they don’t catch me like that, but they behave inappropriately,” the passenger also shared.

Our team goes through “critical” stations such as Kostenets and Ihtiman. The train conductor says that in principle there should be police on board. During the experiment, however, there was no security.

“There are trains in which there should be and it is mandatory. According to statistics, it is known which are dangerous and where accidents occur. These occur mainly on passenger and night trains, ”explained railway expert Petar Bunev.

According to him, it is not possible to check the luggage of all passengers on the train.

“To achieve this, access to stations must be limited. Now, you can enter a station from anywhere,” added Bunev.

TRAIN ATTACK: Investigate why a passenger was stabbed

The expert believes that the police should also think about the safety of employees on trains. When asked for a comment on why there is no security on this night train, the Interior Ministry declined an interview. However, they recalled the words of the interior minister from last week.

“The efficiency of employees working in rail transport is very low. Not to mention, it almost tends to zero. Such attacks and serious crimes occur once every five years and it is absolutely illogical to waste a police resource, “Hristo Terziiski said previously.

According to the minister, it is not necessary to strengthen security on trains. Fortunately, our team’s trip to Pazardzhik was uneventful.

The most critical are the night trains, which leave after 6 pm, the night and work trains. The risk routes are on the Sofia – Bourgas line and especially the Elin Pelin, Vakarel, Ihtiman and Kostenets stations. On the route from Sofia to Vidin, such are the stations around the Iskar gorge: Svoge, Lakatnik, Zverino, Krivodol and Boychinovtsi.

For BDZ, the lack of policemen on the trains is not a problem, since they could go up from any station at risk.
