Today, the Minister of Environment and Water, Emil Dimitrov, participated in an action in which a large illegal extraction of aggregates from the Struma river bed was discovered on the land of the village of Drangovo, municipality of Petrich, announced the center of press of the Ministry of Environment and Water.
The action is by order of the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor’s Office. It involves the economic police, the gendarmerie, experts and the directors of the Directorate of the Western Aegean Basin and the Directorate of Water Management of the Ministry of Environment and Water.
Several heavy trucks and excavators were also found. Near the riverbed a fadroma and a truck with wet inert material were found. A large quantity (about 2-3 thousand cubic meters) of deposited material was found in the neighboring town of Ruzhdak. The river has been illegally blocked with dikes and there are also sections with swamps. This poses a risk of flooding, even affecting a neighboring country, as the river is transboundary.
According to the data collected so far, several companies are involved in illegal extraction on the territory of two municipalities in the Blagoevgrad region. A riverbed inspection is currently being carried out on the section from Petrich to Kulata. The extraction of inert material from river beds in Bulgaria is prohibited.
Pre-trial proceedings have started in the case. Investigative actions continue as MoEW bodies provide full cooperation.
