China announced today that it has officially joined the Covid-19 vaccine global access scheme, known as COVAX, making it the largest economy to support the initiative so far, Reuters reported.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunin said in a statement that China has significant capacity to produce a Kovid-19 vaccine and will provide vaccines as a priority for developing countries once the vaccines are ready.

The COWACS scheme, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to provide at least 2 billion doses of vaccine by the end of 2021.

Mainland China reported 21 new cases of Kovid-19 yesterday, with 11 newly infected the day before. The National Health Commission said all the new cases had been imported from abroad.

The number of confirmed cases in mainland China is now 85,521, and the death toll from the coronavirus remains unchanged at 4,634.
