Bulgaria will miss another great football forum. The dream of Euro 2020 died inglorious after our national team lost 1: 3 in the long-awaited playoff barrage to Hungary. Georgi Dermendzhiev’s team did not play such a weak match on the first reading, but nightmare errors in defense and some strange referee judgments led our opponent to the next qualifying stage for the European Championship.
The “golden” chance of the tricolor was questioned from an early age, after Willy Orban scored for the “Hungarians” with his first best attack. Until halftime, the Bulgarians held their ground, but Toshko Nedelev couldn’t get past the perfect goulash tonight. The second half started badly with a goal from Kalmar’s locker room, who fired an adventurer from a foul, the ball went under the barrier and surprised Plamen Iliev. Our aspiration seemed completely paralyzed in 56, when Todor Nedelev was already preparing to take a penalty, but after the intervention of the VAR, the situation turned into a direct free kick. The classic 0: 3 was formed by Nemanja Nikolic, a quarter before the end.
Two minutes before the referee’s last signal, rookie Georgi Yomov capped his excellent inclusion with a goal, which, however, was grossly insufficient.
Therefore, the Bulgarian hopes go to the Nations League tournament and the next qualifications for the World Cup 2022. We were last in a big forum in 2004 at the European Championship in Portugal.
Georgi Dermendzhiev’s “Lions” started with confidence. In the second minute Toshko Nedelev had the opportunity to take a direct free kick, which unfortunately went over the top beam from Gulashi. The first Hungarian attempts at deep press were crowned with total failure.

Polish referee Jimon Marchinyak provoked the ire of fans as he demonstrated quite high criteria for awarding a foul. Right from the start, the Hungarians started kicking their Bulgarian opponents hard to take the fear of Bozhi Kraev and co.
The 17th minute was extremely unpleasant for Bulgaria, as the Hungarians realized with their first best position in the match. The “Hungarians” executed a corner in which Adam Shalay missed the sharp ball. She continued behind him, where the approaching Willy Orban caught her with his chest in the net of the surprised Plamen Iliev. Our captain Vasil Bozhikov, who missed the central defender of RB Leipzig, was also to blame for the goal.
Immediately after the resumption of the game, the hosts launched an instant search for parity. Todor Nedelev decided to take matters into his own hands and fired a real bomb from medium distance, forcing the enemy goalkeeper to make a great save.
Definitely the collected goal “lit” the fuse for the “tricolor”, who had another good position in the 25th minute. Bozhidar Kraev played the situation intelligently and headed towards Galin Ivanov. The FC CSKA 1948 star processed the ball instantly and his powerful shot went through the right post of the guests.
Very unpleasant news happened to the Bulgarian team in the 30th minute. Galin Ivanov suffered a thigh injury and had to be forcibly replaced. So instead, manager Dermendzhiev decided to bet on CSKA’s Georgi Yomov. It was also the official debut of the fast wing.
The great Bulgarian attack again did not end with a goal in the 37th minute! Anton Nedyalkov finally secured a good cross from his flank, finding Nedelev at the far post. The №8 star played with his head, but Goulashi deflected with his right foot. Defender Adam Lang did what was necessary to prevent Birsent Carrageren from creating the add-on.
Seconds before the break, it was necessary to serve the most deserving. But no! Bozhidar Kraev came so close to performing a masterpiece after he intercepted a strong cross from the right flank with his fifth. Here, however, luck did not cover us, after his goalkeeper Goulashi lunged to the right, but with the tip of his left foot he managed to kill the ball rolling towards the left corner. Absolute bad luck!
The second part started terrible for Bulgaria. The Hungarians had the right to foul from an apparently safe situation. Zlot Kalmar attempted a seemingly adventurous shot that had the power he needed. Unfortunately, the ball went through the crumbling Bulgarian wall, bounced off Bozhidar Kraev and fooled goalkeeper Plamen Iliev, who could also have positioned an idea with greater precision. 0: 2!
In the 56th minute, the Bulgarian audience fell victim to the arbitrariness of the VAR system! Then Bozhidar Kraev fell into the penalty area after being hit in the face by Adam Lang. Initially, referee Marchinyak signaled the penalty and Todor Nedelev was already concentrating on his performances. Then, however, video refereeing came into use and the situation changed from a penalty to a direct free kick. A moment later, Kraev acted strongly, but above the upper beam.
What happened somewhat stopped the momentum of the Bulgarian team and there was a period of the match during which the Hungarians controlled the events on the field. Even a situation between Cicinho and Plamen Iliev could end in an own goal.
In the 72nd minute, Polish referee Jimon Marchinyak once again cut off our desire for a change of course, after Kiril Despodov was obviously brought down in the penalty area. And then, however, the referee, who sought the advice of the VAR, did not want to point out the white point. After this situation, the audience in the national stadium began to shout “Mafia!”
Everything in this long-awaited bombardment ended a quarter of an hour before the end. Appearing as a reserve, minutes before, Hangya centered on the left. The other joined from the bench: Nemanja Nikolic was wedged between Vasil Bozhikov and Anton Nedyalkov. For the class scorer there was nothing left but to hit the defenseless Iliev with the head.
Unfortunately, the Bulgarian team was too late for the goal. The “Lions” were not left behind after scoring an honorable goal in the 88th minute. Appearing minutes before, Ismail Isa showed an excellent view of the game and threw a perfect pass for Georgi Yomov, who in his debut match had the great honor of sign for the national team, although only 1: 3 against Hungary.
