The special appeals court, the first appeals panel, ignored the request of the former mayor of the capital’s Mladost district, Desislava Ivancheva, to change her restriction measure from “house arrest” to a lighter one.

On July 6 of this year, the special appeal court found her guilty of requesting and receiving a bribe of 70,000 euros from the construction businessman Alexander Vaklin to transfer her construction file in the municipality. The special appeals court sentenced her to 8 years in prison with a strict initial regime of service, a fine of BGN 15,000 and deprivation of the right to hold a state and municipal office related to the exercise of power for 10 years.

The court ruled that Ivancheva was guilty of initially claiming € 250,000, then reducing the amount to € 187,500 and finally accepting € 70,000 from Vaklin.

Ivancheva herself insists that she is not guilty.

For her ex-MP Biliana Petrova, the court sentenced her to 7 years in prison, a fine of BGN 12,000 and deprivation of the right to practice in the state and municipal sectors for 9 years for acting as Ivancheva’s assistant. Petko Dyulgerov, mediator in the request and delivery of the bribe, was also found guilty as an assistant and received 6 years in prison, a fine of BGN 10,000 and deprivation of the right to practice in the state and municipal sector for 8 years.
