NO EXCEPTION: Outdoor masks are mandatory throughout Italy

Bergamo was hit extremely hard and became famous all over the world for its columns of military trucks laden with coffins. Why do people compare what happened to them to a world war and how do they come back to life now?

A street in Bergamo became known as the Road of Death. From there, military trucks with 50-60 coffins passed when cemeteries were closed and crowded, along with hospitals and churches. Now this looks like a memory from a fantasy movie. People return to their normal life, but with very shy steps.

THE TRAGEDY IN BERGAMO: Funeral every 30 minutes

According to the administration of the Bergamo cemetery park, the last 6 months have been a real nightmare. After the cemetery church was closed and filled with coffins because there was no place to put them, there are benches and lay people inside again, albeit at a distance from each other. Here people accept this as a return to normalcy and an opportunity to pay tribute to their loved ones.

Hundreds of relatives of COVID-19 victims attend the service every afternoon. At the entrance of the park its temperature is controlled, it is mandatory to wear masks and keep your distance. Bergamo’s elders compare the last few months with the Second World War. Only then did the 500-year-old Cafe del Tesso close. The second time was this year, in March.

Italy with a new COVID-19 test for children

“It was terrible when we closed in March. For the first time in my memory, we locked and sat at home for 60 days. It was absurd for us. Against our will, it was a very difficult situation and we could not believe that we were something like this happening, ”says owner Marcello Menalli.

When entering the historic establishment, people must wear masks. Only after they have ordered and their coffee is ready will they be able to remove the mask to drink.

Why did Italy suffer so much from COVID-19?

“We open with fear and with all the precautions that can be taken. People were very scared, but little by little everyone needed to get out, everyone needed to break free. It was like a battle they wanted to win. The disease against man. I think we succeeded, because little by little people began to leave, to come here. We are all calmer than before, ”Menalli said.

And yet, if before 70 percent of Marcello’s clients were tourists, now they are only 10 to 15 percent.

“Now the clientele is mainly Italian. It is the fault of the State, which has banned almost entirely from traveling outside Italy and into Italy itself,” he added.
