The support of the European People’s Party for the Bulgarian government is a major issue the day after the debate on Bulgaria in the European Parliament.
The initiator of the discussion, Radan Kanev, was not allowed to speak in the room and today he met with Manfred Weber, the first in the EPP parliamentary group, of which Kanev is also a political family.
The limited time of the one-hour debate was the reason why the EPP did not give the floor to Radan Kanev. He managed to take it in writing. He has no intention of leaving the parliamentary group today.
“I said that the silence about what is happening in Bulgaria is complicity. From then on, the political steps that the PPE will take to clarify its image in Bulgaria is something that I would be happy to discuss with my colleagues, ”said Radan Kanev, PPE.
According to Kanev, Weber does not believe that he has given unequivocal support to the Borissov government.
“The current government has a majority in parliament elected by the citizens. There is no reason to resign and, above all, in times of pandemic, a provisional government will come,” Manfred Weber, EPP.
After the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office responded in writing to some of the MEPs’ questions, the chair of the monitoring group said:
“The monitoring group will continue to closely monitor what is happening in Bulgaria: how reforms will be introduced, how corruption will be fought. As soon as possible, we would like to go to the place and speak to people in the first person,” said Sophie int Veld, Renew Europe.
European money for Bulgaria is black caviar for the oligarchs – the words are from Daniel Freund – one of the critics of our country in the European Parliament. Another well-known critic, Iraqi Claire Daly, also spoke at the debate.
“I am not the only voice criticizing the Bulgarian chief prosecutor. He was problematic even before his appointment to this post. So the problem is broader than the responsibility of this particular Attorney General. We all listened to the recordings, we saw the evidence.” said Claire Daly, MEP for the United European Left.
