Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has announced his willingness to make a grand gesture to keep the mascot of the “Gunners” club that was fired.

The German offered to cover Gunnersauer’s salary, which was hit by massive layoffs of Londoners. For 27 years, Jerry Quiy wore the fan-beloved green mascot costume, but was among 55 people laid off due to the financial crisis triggered by the pandemic.

Ozil receives the team’s highest salary of £ 350,000 a week, although he was frozen by manager Mikel Arteta, and decided to help and save Jerry Quay from firing.

“I was very saddened to learn that Jerry Quay, known as our famous and loyal mascot Gunnersaur, was fired after being an integral part of our club for 27 years. Therefore I propose to reimburse Arsenal the full salary of our ever great green boy let him be an Arsenal player, “Ozil wrote on Twitter.

It is not even certain that this will keep the Emirates mascot, as jokingly or not, Sevilla announced that they will attract Gunnersaur after it became clear that the Gunners are letting go.

The reaction from Arsenal fans was stormy and a petition for Quay’s return garnered more than 40,000 signatures.
