“We had a good conversation with Boyko Borissov about Bulgaria”. This was written on Twitter by the president of the EPP group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber.
“The European Commission’s assessment of the rule of law in Bulgaria has been fair, showing that there is a need for improvement. However, the government has made progress on many issues, bringing it closer to the euro and Schengen.”, he wrote.
Weber expressed respect for the country’s protesters, but said the March elections should decide the fate of the country.
However, the support of the EPP did not prevent representatives of various protest groups from organizing demonstrations in front of the European Parliament building, in whose parliamentary hall the debates on the resolution on the rule of law and fundamental rights in Bulgaria will take place tonight.
The protest representatives of “Yes, Bulgaria”, led by party leader Hristo Ivanov, expressed their discontent in Brussels at noon. I was in front of the parliament building MEP Radan Kanev, who announced in his official profile on the social network that the leadership of the EPP group did not give him the right to intervene in today’s debate.
“It seems to me deeply wrong, in terms of the long-term interest of the EPP and the eternal values that the party stands for. At today’s meeting of the EPP group, just before the debate, I will make one last attempt to convince the leadership of the EPP group. that the passive and defensive position harms both the EPP and the interests of Bulgarian citizens and European taxpayers “wrote Kanev, who specified that he will exercise his right to a written statement in support of the protests demanding the resignation of the government.

Other protest organizers in Bulgaria, the Poison Trio, are expected to unite in front of the European Parliament building. There is information that later Bulgarian citizens from Belgium and the Netherlands, who support the protests, will also meet.
The debate in the European Parliament will start today at around 8pm Bulgarian time, and only MEPs appointed in advance by their parliamentary groups will be able to speak.
Another Bulgarian MEP, Alexander Yordanov, who is opposed to holding early parliamentary elections in Bulgaria, also commented on what is to come:
There will probably be no free speeches. From the EPP parliamentary group – the defenders of Bulgaria, the following will speak: Manfred Weber – President, Andrey Kovachev – Vice-President, Roberta Mezzola – Coordinator of the LIBE Commission and Andrey Novakov. What I had to say on the subject of this anti-Bulgarian action by socialists, communists, greens and left liberals, I said in the EPP working group in the LIBE commission, as well as in front of the parliamentary group. Despite the recommendation of the Parliament Medical Service, MPs from the so-called 100% risk group to avoid participation in indoor meetings, I will be present in the plenary hall to listen and see how low the blasphemers of Bulgaria can fall. The protester “poisoned” by Minekov malice will not be admitted to Parliament. The vote on the resolution will be on Thursday and then it will be clear which political forces in Europe are friends of Bulgaria and which ones do not think well of us. Regarding the behavior of the initiators of the debate, Yoncheva and Kanev, it is clear that the friendship between BSP and DB will be further strengthened after this debate. For Bulgaria to suffer.
The resolution was adopted on October 1 by the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). The initiator is the president of the commission Juan Fernando López Aguilar. It expresses concern at the persistent lack of visible results in high-level corruption investigations and at the serious deterioration of the situation of media freedom in Bulgaria.
The final vote is scheduled for Thursday, October 8.
