The Bulgarian prosecutor’s office has no active contact with the Spanish prosecutor’s office in the investigation of the house in Barcelona, a case in which the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, was also reviewed for money laundering. Therefore, no information was received from Spain and nothing was requested or sent to the Spanish.

This is stated in one of the responses of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria to questions from MEPs from the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG).

On September 7, they explicitly asked whether the Bulgarian prosecution, which received the first signal in 2019, was working on the case and at what level the investigation was.

On September 21, the Prosecutor’s Office responded that an investigation was underway, without specifying when it was informed by the BOEC, when the investigation began, and when a supervisory prosecutor was appointed regarding this signal and the publication in the newspaper Periódico.

“Explanations were taken from the persons indicated on the signal (including Prime Minister Boyko Borissov), tax inspections and inspections were assigned to the NRA for them and for legal persons. Part of the results of the assigned inspections are still pending. to several competent Bulgarian institutions “. , write in the text.

It follows that, to confirm the facts and circumstances, it was necessary to request information from the Spanish authorities. This happened on March 4, 2020 through the Directorate of International Operational Cooperation of the Ministry of the Interior, and to begin with, it was asked if there was any investigation in Spain according to data from “Periódico”.

The answer did not arrive until July 10, and it described the leaders as Mossos D’Esquadra (Autonomous Police of the Province of Catalonia) and the Special Prosecutor’s Office for the Fight against Corruption and Organized Crime in Barcelona. Since the investigation was classified as “confidential”, the information requested by Bulgaria could only be sent through an established contact between the supervising prosecutors and the question was who was on the Bulgarian side.

On July 22, the Bulgarian prosecution sent a letter with the relevant information, but after that there was no reaction from the Spanish side, the Bulgarian letter to MEPs states.

“The investigation in this case has not ended and in this sense it is necessary to wait for the results of the designated inspections of natural and legal persons, as well as the information requested by the competent authorities of the Kingdom of Spain”, concludes the response.
