Extraordinary news from Belgrade on the extradition of Tsvetan Vassilev!

The Supreme Court of Belgrade has again approved Tsvetan Vassilev’s extradition request. This was announced by the Serbian “Insider”.

However, this is only the first step to unblock the procedure, as the decision can be appealed to the Court of Appeal, and the last word is with the Ministry of Justice, the article recalls.

It points out that this is precisely what is provided for in article 31 of the Law on International Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. “We do not comment on any case that is subject to prosecution,” Sergei Andreev from our embassy in Serbia told the newspaper.

The procedure has been going on for six years. The Bulgarian institutions requested extradition in September 2014, and the Belgrade Supreme Court approved the request twice, but the Court of Appeal returned the case.

This review by the trial court came after Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev informed the European institutions earlier in the year that the Belgrade authorities had refused to extradite Vassilev for six years.

Three days later, the Supreme Court announced that it was considering the Bulgarian prosecutor’s additional request for the extradition of banker Tsvetan Vassilev, who had fled to Serbia.
