The President of the Government, Boyko Borissov, was summoned to the prosecution and explanations were taken from him in relation to the file of the house in Barcelona. This is clear from the responses of the State Prosecutor’s Office on the issues of the Civil Liberties Commission of the European Parliament (LIBE). The prosecution’s responses have been uploaded to the European Parliament website.
At the end of February, the Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a complaint in relation to the complaints made on February 21, 2020 in an article in the Spanish newspaper El Periódico entitled: “The investigation into money laundering in Barcelona targets the Prime Minister of Bulgaria. The MEPs have asked what is being done in our country with respect to the information published in the Spanish media.
The responses of the Prosecutor’s Office are that the investigation in our country, opened by the publications of the Spanish edition “Periódico”, expect data from the Spanish side.
“Explanations were taken from the persons indicated on the signal (including Prime Minister Boyko Borissov), tax inspections and inspections were assigned to the NRA for them and for legal persons. Some of the results of the assigned inspections of various competent Bulgarian institutions are still awaited“I write from the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office.
It is clear that so far Spain has not provided an opportunity for direct contact between the Bulgarian and Spanish prosecutors in the case, and this request was made by the Spanish representatives to inform their Bulgarian colleagues with data from the course of the investigation.
On July 10, the Ministry of the Interior received a letter with information about the investigation in Spain. He clarified that it was led by the Autonomous Police of Catalonia and the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organized Crime of Barcelona. The investigation was classified as “confidential”, which is why the information requested by Bulgaria could only be provided through contact between the supervising prosecutors.
Therefore, a new request was made to provide the names of the supervising prosecutor in the case in Bulgaria and the contact details. The information requested was provided to the competent authorities in Spain by letter dated July 22 from the prosecutor supervising the case to the Special Prosecutor’s Office. Despite the contact details provided and the long time that has elapsed, the judiciary in Spain has not yet contacted the Bulgarian institutions.
Meanwhile, a new article was added to the file of the Spanish newspaper El Periódico on the sale of the house mentioned in the report in Spain.
