Goalkeeper Bernd Leno sent Liverpool out of the League Cup in England after saving two penalties and helping Arsenal knock the Reds out of the game. The two teams met again just 3 days after the Reds’ success in the championship with 3: 1.
Unlike last year, when the two teams played a fantastic match in the race, which ended 5: 5 and then Merseyside won on penalty kicks, this time the goals in regulation time did not fall, and now the winner was different.
In the 90 minutes the hosts had the advantage most of the time, especially in the second half they reached several good positions, but they failed them and then they were penalized on penalties and Arsenal reached the quarterfinals.
Thus, Liverpool have lost 5 of the last 6 cases in which the match must be resolved with kicks from the penalty spot, including Arsenal for the Community Shield trophy at the start of the season.
There were many changes in both teams, although Virgil Van Dyke and Mohamed Salah started for the hosts. Sadio Mane and Firmino were not in the group, and Diogo Jota was also a starter. Pierre-Emerick Obameyang was missing for Arsenal, Alexander Lacazette remained on the bench and Eddie Nketia led the attack.
The start was even before the Londoners failed in the 8th minute. Sebayos found Nketia in a clear position on the edge of the goal area, the striker hesitated a bit, allowing Adrián to come out and reach the ball, preventing him from the striker will shoot inaccurately.
The hosts responded with a situation through Marko Gruic, whose shot to the near corner, however, was rather imprecise. Minutes followed in which there was a lack of quality in the plays in the top positions of both teams. In the 34th minute Jones had a chance to shoot, but did well in Leno’s hands.
In the last seconds of the first half, luck saved the Gunners. After a cross, Jota headed in and made Leno make a save, but then the ball ended up at Minamino, who didn’t have time to react, but remained in excellent position, sending the ball to the crossbar and Arsenal survived.
The second half began with an inaccurate header from Gruich, and in the 53rd minute, following a corner kick, Van Dyke shot hard, but Leno saved. The hosts pushed, and Jota played hard, finding Gruich in the 60th minute, whose experience was saved by Leno. Soon after, Klopp took out Van Dyke and Salah.
In the 63rd minute, Jota forced Leno to intervene again, and seconds later the German goalkeeper managed to transfer a header to Gruich. Only in the 69th minute did Arsenal reach a situation where Holding shot with his head, but Adrián managed it solidly. A situation in front of Nketia followed, which failed.
The drama could have occurred in added time, when in an attack by Arsenal Milner helped in defense, stopping the rival. The veteran slipped on the grass and the ball touched his hand, but was not awarded a penalty. And so the penalty kicks that were to determine the winner came again.
The first 5 penalties were taken perfectly and without a pass, before Mohamed Elneni crashed and Adrián deflected his shot. However, Bernd Leno immediately did the same against Divok Origi. Maitland-Niles, Jones and Pepe did not fail to reach 4: 4 after the first 5 attempts. Immediately afterwards, Leno saved Harry Wilson’s shot, and Joe Willock qualified for Arsenal, although Adrian reached for the ball, but it went below his body and went through the door.
