The Arsenal team beat Liverpool on penalties (5: 4) in the “Anfield” round of 16 match in the League Cup. Both teams failed to score in regulation time, and on 11-meter penalty kicks Bernd Leno was a hero for his team, reflecting two performances by players from the opposing team.
The game started at par, but the first really serious situation came in minute 6 and was for the guests. After a good stretch, Nikola Pepe received a great pass from deep. The Côte d’Ivoire forward found Joe Wickall at the penalty spot and turned right towards Eddie Nketia. However, the young shooter was busy and Adrian managed to kill.
Six minutes later it was the hosts’ turn to respond. After a corner, Diogo Jota found Marko Gruic on the penalty spot, but the Serbian did not hit the target. The two teams kept exchanging periods of pressure and possession of the ball, but the clear positions weren’t much.
In the 29th minute, Liverpool’s well-organized multi-pass attack ended with a pass to left-back James Milner, whose center, however, was infinitely inaccurate. In the 41st minute Danny Sebayos tried his luck from more than 25 meters, but the ball went wide.
Literally, in the last minute of regulation time, he brought the biggest opportunity for the half. After a cross from Neco Williams, Diogo Jota was uncovered at the back post, but his shot was stopped by Bernd Leno. Takumi Minamino hit the top post.
At the beginning of the second half, “Merseysiders” firmly pressed Arsenal in the middle of the guests. Marco Gruich put Bernd Leno’s reflexes to the test twice, with a particularly dangerous shot in the 60th minute.
Three minutes later, the Serbian midfielder was again at the center of events. Following a cross from a corner kick, he rose to the top and aimed a balloon shot at the “gunners” gate, but Leno was once again on a level to kill with the last force.
Six minutes later, it was Adrian’s turn to intervene after a corner kick and a header from Rob Holding. In the following minutes, the situation on the field remained the same, with penalties increasingly close as an opportunity.
In the last minutes Bernd Leno again had to show a good reflection, but in the end the two zeros stayed and the match had to be resolved with the implementation of 11-meter penalties.
In the execution of penalties, both teams scored 4 of the first 5, which meant that both teams started with sudden death on penalties. Harry Wilson was the sinner of the “Merseysiders” after Bernd Leno cleverly reflected his performance, and Joe Wilcock brought the final hit with 5: 4 on penalties.
