The Civil Liberties Commission of the European Parliament (LIBE) voted in favor of a resolution supporting protests against the government in Bulgaria. The EP stands in solidarity with the legitimate demands of the people, he said.
MEPs deeply regret that “Development in Bulgaria has led to a significant deterioration in respect for the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights, including the independence of the judiciary, the separation of powers, the fight against corruption and freedom of the media, and expresses its solidarity with the people of Bulgaria in their legitimate demands. and the search for justice, transparency, accountability and democracy“, read the text.
This must stop
At the same time, MEPs are concerned about the lack of convictions for high-level corruption in our country and argue that the government should ensure strict control over the absorption of EU funds, because there is a suspicion that the money will “close the ruling party”.
The author of the resolution is the president of the commission Juan Fernando López Aguilar. The full text can be viewed here.
“The rule of law is directly related to the protection of EU interests and the fight against corruption. In member states with structural deficiencies in the application of the rule of law, most of the time there are corrupt practices in the absorption of EU funds. This must stop“he said.
The resolution was adopted by the commission with 35 votes in favor, 30 against and 1 abstention. The group of Socialists and Democrats has the most support. The PPE, of which GERB is a part, voted against. Bulgarian MEPs Angel Djambazki and Emil Radev also voted against the resolution. The document has the support of Elena Yoncheva.
This is the second blow to the Bulgarian government within two days of the publication of the critical report on the rule of law in our country. The central issue in it is the inviolability of the Attorney General and the impossibility of controlling his actions. The issue was raised again during the committee meeting on Thursday. EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reinders said Bulgaria needed “responsibility of the attorney general”. Elena Yoncheva asked the questions about Bulgaria.
GERB representative Emil Radev also joined the meeting remotely. However, he did not comment on the resolution, but spoke about the committee’s report. Radev called for a common evaluation mechanism for all countries to ensure there is no discrimination. He also cites a survey showing that 71% of European citizens consider corruption to be a serious problem.
They are like vampires
In addition to the resolution, the committee is debating the report published the day before. It became an occasion for another reminder that the absorption of EU funds should be linked to the rule of law in each individual country. Many MEPs have said that such a mechanism is needed, but that it must be effective and not remain on paper.
Irish Claire Daly made a critical statement about the situation in Bulgaria. She mentioned some of the corruption scandals in the absorption of European money in our country. The Daily pointed out that 100 million euros were wasted in the construction of guest houses, millions of euros for estates that do not exist. She said that at the same time, the Minister of Agriculture, Desislava Taneva, advised to remain silent, because otherwise the European money will stop.
“Our money is like blood to these vampiressaid the Daily.
