Surprisingly, GERB supported in the first reading the United Patriots proposal to call May 24 Day of Bulgarian Literature, Education and Culture, and not Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Literature, as it is today.
However, before the final vote, according to GERB deputy Toma Bikov, there would be a public debate. There were 76 deputies and the proposal was accepted.
These are changes to the Labor Code introduced by IMRO. For the deputies of Krassimir Karakachanov’s party, it was inaccurate that May 24 was called the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and of the Slavic alphabet, since the Cyrillic alphabet was Bulgarian and not Slavic. For this reason, the National Assembly had to change the name of May 24 as the Day of Bulgarian Literature, Education and Culture.
Once the decision was approved in first reading, the GERB included in the extraordinary agenda of the parliament the establishment of a temporary commission to discuss the party’s draft for a new constitution. It is speculated that there was an agreement between GERB to support the name change on May 24 and the “patriots” to establish the commission.
