There will be a square named after Vaclav Havel in Sofia. This was decided today unanimously by the Commission for Culture and Education of the Sofia City Council. The intersection of Hristo and Evlogi Georgievi Blvd. with Shipka St. and Asen Zlatarov St. (opposite the entrance to the Military Academy) will be named after the Czech playwright and president.
The sender of the proposal, Traicho Traikov, mayor of the Sredets region, points out that the initiative belongs to the Sofia Discussion Forum. The reasoning goes that Havel’s personality is a symbol of the unification of Eastern and Western Europe. “It is an honor for Bulgaria, despite the totalitarian communist regime, to be one of the countries where a petition was organized in 1988 for Havel’s release from prison,” Traikov noted.
Havel (1936-2011) was President of Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992 and of the Czech Republic until 2003. He actively lobbied for Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union.
The unanimous decision of the Culture and Education Commission will be voted on in a session of the Sofia City Council.
