The breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region announced today that 16 of its military were killed and more than 100 wounded in clashes with Azerbaijani units, BTA reports.
Today fighting broke out between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces challenging Nagorno-Karabakh, which is located on Azerbaijani territory but is ruled by ethnic Armenians. This has rekindled fears of instability in the South Caucasus, a corridor of oil and gas pipelines to world markets, according to Reuters.
Five members of an Azerbaijani family were killed today in the artillery barrage, Azerbaijan’s Attorney General reported, AFP reported. The International Committee of the Red Cross has called on parties to the conflict to protect civilian lives and infrastructure, as required by international law.
Red Cross officials have been working in the region since 1992 to help people living along the Armenian-Azerbaijani demarcation line and to mediate between the countries involved in the conflict.
