Lewis Hamilton won the first position for the Russian Grand Prix after many vicissitudes in qualifying at the Sochi Autodrome, during which second segment Sebastian Vettel crashed badly. The second in the session was Max Verstappen (Red Bull), the third was Valteri Botas with the second Mercedes.

The air temperature at the beginning of the session was 26 degrees, that of the track – 34. There were many clouds over the track and it was getting dark, but the probability of rain according to meteorologists was only 10%. George Russell took to the track for the first time on medium Q1 9 tires.

Russell said on the radio that the conditions on the track were quite different from the third free practice. Mercedes started a series with software, like all other drivers except the British driver Williams.

Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasley made a mistake on their fastest laps (the Englishman was canceled), Nicholas Latifi and Kevin Magnussen jumped off the track. After the first series, Valteri Botas was in the lead, Hamilton was 0.327 seconds behind him and the third, Sergio Pérez, was more than a second behind the Finn. Esteban Ocon, Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi, Romain Grosjean and Latifi (no time) were in the relegation zone.

At the end of Q1, Raikkonen turned around at corner two, where the majority of mistakes were made in this qualifying segment.

This practically ended the session for him. With his last attempt, Russell gave the 13th time – ahead of Ferrari Leclerc and Vettel.

In addition to the Finnish Alfa Romeo driver, his teammate Giovinaci, Grosjean, Magnussen and Latifi were also eliminated.

Mercedes and Verstappen started Q2 on medium tires when raindrops appeared on the track. Hamilton topped the standings with 1: 32.085 minutes, but that time was canceled. Carlos Sainz was first before Daniel Ricciardo improved his performance – 1: 32.218. Sergio Pérez was third, followed by Boots, Lando Norris, Gasley, Verstappen.

Russell found himself on a clean track in the middle of Q2, shortly after which the next heat began. Boots and Hamilton put a new medium, Verstappen, soft. However, during his fastest laps, Vettel crashed badly in turn four 2:15 minutes before the end of the second qualifying segment. Lecler, who was behind him, passed the front wing of his teammate’s car, which had fallen on the track. The session was immediately suspended for flight control.

A queue forms at the exit of the pit lane before the resumption of the session. Hamilton installed new software and waited until he came out of the pits

Stroll was called in to shut down the engine and was pulled out of the queue at the exit. Hamilton flew off the track again when told to pass the cars in front of him. The Englishman went on a fast track barely a second before time ran out. His time was fourth, 0.617 seconds behind Ricciardo’s, but he was in the top 10.

After Q2, the crashed Vettel, Löckler, Quiat, Stroll and Russell did not continue.

Renault drivers led the column in the battle of Q3. The first recorded time was at Okon – 1: 33.117, which was improved by Ricciardo. Sainz lined up behind the Australian. Boots topped the standings with 1: 32.184 minutes, but Hamilton was faster than his teammate by 0.793 seconds! Verstappen finished third, almost a second behind Lewis.

In the last attempts Verstappen scored a second half and beat Boots, Hamilton remained in the lead.
