With 240,000 BGN of its budget, the Varna municipality is starting preparations for the coastal city to become the second after Sofia to have a metro.

The allocation of the amount was approved by the Budget Committee of the Municipal Council and will be voted on in the next session.

The proposal to build high-speed electric transport in Varna came after a visit by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who invited the mayor of Varna, Ivan Portnih, to propose a project.

The idea is to make the so-called “Light Rail”, which will connect the route from the industrial zone of the city to the “Golden Sands” tourist complex.

The proposal will be part of the infrastructure project “Reconstruction design of Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. on the stretch from Vasil Levski Blvd. to the Airport road junction, Mladost district, Vladislav Varnenchik district”.

The reasons for building a “light rail” are the increase in the number of cars in the city and the reduction of the capacity of a large part of the network of streets formed. Last but not least, the reasons are the deterioration of the environmental situation, heavy traffic jams and difficulty in getting around on public transport.

The established amount of 240,000 BGN will be spent on feasibility studies, to determine the land for the landfill and the construction of Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. and the preparation of the terms of reference for the selection of a contractor for the preparation of a project of investment – technical project phase.

The funds will be provided from the Varna Municipality budget for 2020 as a compensated program, announced the Varna Municipality press center.
