The investigation into the accident that killed journalist Milen Tsvetkov in April has ended. This newspaper learned “Now” by lawyer Menko Menkov, who represents Tsvetkov’s relatives. Milen Tsvetkov died in a nightmare car accident while waiting with his car at a red light near a shopping center in Sofia, a jeep collided with his car at high speed. Christian Nikolov was accused of intentionally causing his death. He has been detained since April. But lawyers suggest that once the investigation is over, you can ask the court to change your pretrial detention measure to a lighter one. The court’s reasons for keeping Nikolov in custody were that there is a reasonable suspicion that the young man caused the accident and, furthermore, there is a danger of escape or committing a new crime. He refused to appeal the ruling of the Sofia City Court, explaining that he was very willing to cooperate.
The court found in April that during the accident Nikolov was under the influence of four different types of narcotics, but was aware of the risk it could create as a participant in the movement. There is no evidence of insanity at this stage and it can be assumed that he is probably mentally healthy and indifferent to the occurrence of dangerous consequences, the court said at the time. Witness testimony and technical experience from the video show that he had an objective opportunity to perceive the danger on the road, assess the consequences of his direction of movement, speed, but nevertheless confidently continued to move towards Tsvetkov’s car , completely ignoring the meaning of the red light.
In April, Nikolov’s lawyer pleaded that he was not driving the car that hit the journalist’s car. Lawyer Lyubomir Takov asked the magistrates to release him without any action. He also noted that it was not investigated whether the cause of death was the accident or the improper actions of eyewitnesses, including removing Tsvetkov from the car, shaking his head, heart massage.
For the crime of which Nikolov is accused, the Penal Code provides for 15 to 20 years or life imprisonment.
Nikolov’s mother, 22, is also charged in connection with the accident, as she gave him the car with which the accident occurred. The passengers of Nikolov’s jeep, Simona Tsvetkova and Georgi Ivanov, were also brought to justice. son of GERB MP Lachezar Ivanov.
