The Verdi House in the center of Milan was built in 1899 with the personal funds of the great Giuseppe Verdi and to this day continues to serve as a nursing home for singers and musicians over 65 and with the support of the composer himself. The master bequeaths all the proceeds of the copyright of his works to maintain the house and its occupants.
During his life, Verdi said: “Of all my works, I love the house that I built in Milan, where I can house elderly opera artists who have not benefited from fate or who did not have the virtue to save when they were young. Poor and very dear companions in my life! “
Dom Verdi’s first guests settled there in 1902, a year after the composer’s death, and since then the structure has hosted more than a thousand musicians, choristers, conductors, orchestrators and singers.
The master died in the Milan Hotel, a stone’s throw from La Scala, on January 27, 1901, and was originally buried in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan. A month later, in compliance with his will, the master’s remains were transferred to the crypt of Dom Verdi to the grave of his great love, the opera singer Giuseppe Streponi. The mourning ceremony was attended by more than 300,000 Verdi supporters, and a choir of 820 performers sang the aria Va ‘pensiero from the opera “Nabucco”, conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini.
The composer stands next to his beloved Giuseppe.
