Bulgaria’s accusations are fabricated

Russia regrets Bulgaria’s decision to declare two employees of the Russian trade mission in Sofia “persona non grata”. This is stated in the official position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that the decision of the Bulgarian authorities was made “on the basis of fabricated accusations”. Already yesterday, the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria announced that the Bulgarian side had not provided evidence that the two diplomats had carried out activities incompatible with their status, BNR reported.

However, according to the prosecutor’s office, since 2016, diplomats have been collecting information related to the modernization of the Bulgarian army for the needs of Russian intelligence. The Russian Foreign Ministry declares that they regard Bulgaria’s actions as a “deliberate attempt to damage constructive Russian-Bulgarian cooperation” and that they will announce retaliatory measures at a later stage. Most likely, two diplomats from our embassy in Moscow will be declared “persona non grata”, as is the usual diplomatic practice.
