Air Force Commander Tsanko Stoykov, who found himself in the limelight with his participation in President Rumen Radev’s telephone conversations, will be promoted to Lieutenant General and become the new deputy defense chief.
On Wednesday, the government proposed to the president to issue decrees on new general appointments, including the promotion of Tsanko Stoykov, who is currently a major general.
In January this year, the prosecution released recordings of a telephone conversation between the president and the Air Force commander, in which the two discussed how to respond to KPKONPI for the appointment of the current wife of the head of state Desislava for public relations in the SJC in 2014.
According to the explanations of the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev, the recordings are part of an investigation, in the framework of which special intelligence means were used against the Air Force commander. According to Geshev, this is an investigation into “a company that is a contractor for the Defense Ministry and the armed forces in general for several deliveries of hundreds of millions over the years.
Then Radev announced that he had been illegally eavesdropped, and War Minister Krassimir Karakachanov supported Stoykov and he remained in office. The internal inspection of the Defense Ministry did not find any violation by Tsanko Stoykov regarding the appointment of Desislava Radeva.
Tsanko Stoykov has led the Air Force since September 2016, replacing Rumen Radev, who left to run for president.
Under Stoykov, the project to acquire new fighters was completed. Bulgaria bought F-16 Block 70 fighters from the United States for more than BGN 2.1 billion.
Stoykov will be replaced as chief of military aviation by Dimitar Petrov, who will be promoted to major general. Until now, he is the commander of a third air base: “Count Ignatievo”.
Colonel Nikolai Rusev will become base commander and will be awarded the rank of senior officer of “brigadier general”.
The Cabinet also proposes that the president issue a decree granting Colonel Ivan Malamov the rank of senior officer of “brigadier general.”
