The stupid act of Cyprus

It turns out that the treasures of dubious Belarusian officials are stored in Cyprus? Is that why the country has linked its agreement on sanctions against people of the Belarus regime with the imposition of sanctions also against Turkey?

As EU member states, Greece and Cyprus can count on the support of the Community in the gas dispute with Turkey. How and by what means the EU will react, this must be decided jointly by the Member States. And if Cyprus believes that sanctions are needed in this case, the country must convince its European partners. But the way Cyprus is trying to do it is completely inappropriate, even stupid. And it damages the interests and image of the Cypriot state itself.

By linking its agreement on sanctions against representatives of the Belarusian regime with the imposition of sanctions also on Ankara, that is, by intertwining two plots that have nothing in common, the Cypriot government gives the impression that the EU is blocked in foreign policy. And that will only encourage Turkey to take an even tougher stance on the gas conflict.

Furthermore, in such a conflict, a small country like Cyprus has the opportunity to defend its interests only if it can rely on a truly viable EU. Or perhaps the resistance of Cyprus is still directly related to Belarus? For years, the Mediterranean island has benefited from serving as a kind of center of attraction for the wealth of post-Soviet oligarchs and politicians. Wealth of unknown origin. Does it turn out that the money of Belarusian officials, on whom the EU wants to impose sanctions, is also stored there?
