In the last hours of the “Great People’s Uprising 3” there were clashes between protesters and the police over the decision of the authorities to block the march on its way to St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
On several occasions, the protesters tried to break the police blockade by force, but were repulsed with shields. The protesters yelled at the police “Janissaries!”
Earlier, thousands of citizens across the country took part in Tuesday’s 76th day of protests against the government and the attorney general, which were billed as the third edition of the “Great Uprising of the People.” The previous two major “uprisings” were on September 2 and 10.
People from Ruse, Pernik, Plovdiv, Kresna and many other cities gathered in Independence Square on the Bulgarian independence day.
A group of young people from Kyustendil protested against deforestation. There were farmers from Yambol who demanded the resignation of Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva due to “theft of EU subsidies” and Bulgarians eat foreign food. The farmers came out with a call for “Resignation of Borisov, Kasket and the Sheep Sliven Karakachan”.
The slogan “We want the independence of the mafia” was announced from the platform of the protest.
Tensions in front of the old parliament building
Late at night, absolutely unnecessarily, the protest police guards caused tension between the protesters and the police in front of the old parliament building. Shortly after 9 pm, the protesters marched, but this time they walked several times around the new parliament building before heading to the Rector’s Office of the University of Sofia.
At the corner of the BAS building, the protesters were stopped by the police when they tried to turn towards the “St. Alexander Nevsky” cathedral. This angered the protesters, who began yelling at the police. More policemen responded.
A little later, the water bottles flew towards the police, but there were no clashes. Arman Babikyan of the “Poison Trio” told bTV that the objective of the protesters on Independence Day was to walk and pay tribute to the royal parliament building with the slogan “Unity is strength”, as the new place of the deputies in the minds of his people. Some of the protesters tried to lay flowers in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, but failed due to the police cordon. The press center of the Interior Ministry explained that there is no official order to have a cordon there and restrict access to the monument.
