Nova TV’s new series “Brothers,” which started last week, managed to catch viewers in front of the screen in just ten days. The story of two brothers who face each other in a dangerous war, with its premiere episode, grabbed the audience, and its rating results are still impressive. It also set a new standard: for the first time on Bulgarian air, a crime drama airs every weekday evening starting at 10.30pm and its episodes are 30 minutes long.
Their success is undoubtedly aided by the talented cast, which is a combination of some of the hottest stars like Kalin Vrachanski, Joanna Temelkova and Bashar Rahal with many new faces for the small screen. “We are convinced that viewers need diversity, both in gender and in variety of new talented people, so we have tried in this direction,” said the team.
The idea for “Brothers” came from producer Krasi Vankov, who has already established himself with series like “All Inclusive” and “Condominium”. He and his team have been working on their new project for more than 2 years, and behind the script are some of the best professionals of this genre in Bulgaria: Teodora Markova, Nevena Kertova, Alexander Chobanov, Georgi Ivanov and Plamena Velkovski.
Since the beginning of 2019, they began to write the story of two brothers who were extremely close in the past, but fate separated them through dramatic events. Now their paths cross again and they start a fierce battle between them. It constantly pushes them into the past, from which they are trying to escape with all their might. They provoke, change and ruin each other, they go to extremes to understand that they are the two opposite sides of a coin, inextricably linked in love and hate.
The two brothers star in familiar faces on screen. Kalin Vrachanski has the image of the researcher Boris Donkov, who is a man of deeds, not words. He has all the traits of a positive character: a principled, responsible, faithful, courageous and well-organized workaholic with an innate sense of detail. These qualities are also noticeable in the service, for which he was promoted.
The GDCOP investigator likes to have everything under control. Prosecuting and catching criminals is not just a profession for Boris Donkov, but a cause. With police work, he tries to make up for the mistakes of his youth. A great support in his life is his wife Laura, whom he sincerely loves.
But Boris has his fears of his dark past, which he cannot forget and which will change his life forever. Boris’s biggest battle is with himself, with the anger and guilt he hides, with his own weaknesses. Boris is desperately pursuing the truth and seeking peace with himself, which will lead him through a very thorny path of testing.
His brother is businessman Dragomir Donkov, whose image includes actor and singer Vladimir Mihailov. Drago is an intelligent, charismatic man and he sure knows how to draw the attention of others to himself. As a young man he was a warm man who believed in love, but due to difficult events he changed radically. Sam learns to deal with the vicissitudes of fate.
He is one of those ambitious people who calmly and patiently pursue his goals. Behind its facade hides a cynical and unscrupulous, vindictive and manipulative man who foresees the actions of others with a few steps forward. It gives him pleasure to subdue women, he enjoys the moments when he possesses them and subdues them. Relentless with the feelings of others, he is obsessed with revenge for everything he has experienced.
The bone of contention is a beautiful woman: Laura, who is now the wife of researcher Boris Donkov. She runs her own agency specialized in organizing various events. Laura is at stake in a fierce war between brothers who are madly in love with a woman. She has found her safe haven with Boris, which makes her feel stronger, more stable, more aware. The two of them hold on to each other because they have something to give to each other. But among them are sometimes their own fears, guilt, and shadows from the past they struggle with.
The role of Laura is played by the talented actress Joanna Temelkova.
Thus, the series shows not only the war between two brothers or the investigation of serious crimes, but also the problems of different generations. The impossible love, the strength and weakness of the human soul and the struggle between the two, betrayal and ambition, trust, secrets, lies, infidelity and revenge, everything that excites each of us of us, find a place in the plot.
In addition to Bashar Rahal, Iskra Donova, Stoyo Mirkov, Deliana Hadjiyankova, Todor Tanchev, Stella Gancheva, Daria Hadjiyska, Martin Petkov, Leart Dokle, Hristina Dzhurova and others also have roles in the series.
The directors of “Brothers” are Niki Iliev, Boya Harizanova, Stanislav Donchev, Lyubomir Pechev, Yordan Chichikov, Orlin Milchev. “As in all the projects I have worked on, in ‘Brothers’ I like the challenge of being in tune with the other directors: each of us shoots different scenes, but once the episode is ready, it is not seen” says director Boya. Аризанова. She herself is already an established name in the industry, having won several awards from international festivals in Russia, Japan, China, Croatia, Syria, Turkey, Israel, and others. As a director, Boya Harizanova is also behind the success of the comedy series All Inclusive, the second season of which is currently airing on Nova TV.
His colleague Niki Iliev already has several films of his own behind him, which have been awarded many times at home and abroad. He is happy to be behind the camera of the crime drama “Brothers”. I’ve always wanted to work in this genre and I’m happy this is happening with “Brothers”. This genre gives the opportunity to use many directing techniques and I find it quite interesting, “says Niki Iliev.
Two teams work on filming the series 6 days a week for 12 hours. The action is not lacking either, the spectators have already seen scenes with chases, explosions and shootings. For them, the team often consults with real policemen, forensic scientists and specialists, who help them more accurately show the actions of both the pursuer and the pursued. “Action scenes are one of the most difficult and time-consuming to shoot, but when you see them ready on the screen, the satisfaction is great,” says director Niki Iliev.
